Reach Out to the Phoenix VA LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinator

June was PRIDE Month, and VA takes pride in striving to improve the health and healthcare for LGBTQ+ Veterans. There are an estimated one million lesbian, gay, and bisexual Veterans in the United States. Research also shows that transgender identity is about five times more common among Veterans than non-Veterans.

Sexual and gender minority Veterans have faced stigma and discrimination, which can affect health, so VA is working to make sure that LGBTQ+ Veterans know they are welcome within the VA healthcare system.

For information about services, reach out to our Phoenix VA LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinator, Dr. Ash Senter, at 602-234-7190.

  • Florida May Pass a Law Outlawing Curly Hair!

“Senior Class President Zander Moricz was tapped with giving a commencement speech at Pine View School in Osprey, Fla., but was given a restriction not normally attached to such an event. An openly gay activist who is the youngest plaintiff in a lawsuit against a new state law that restricts what teachers can say in classes about gender and sexual orientation, the teenager said publicly that he had been warned by his principal not to mention his activism or say the word “gay.” If he did, Moricz said on social media, his microphone would be cut off.” 1

  • Disney Fails Gay Youth

    Disneyworld

“Walt Disney’s CEO has apologized for his “painful silence” on a Florida sex education bill critics warn will isolate LGBT youth. “You needed me to be a stronger ally in the fight for equal rights and I let you down. I am sorry,” Bob Chapek told employees. His comments come amid internal complaints that “gay affection” is routinely cut from some Disney films.” 2

“Disney’s chief executive, Bob Chapek, got a harsh introduction to the new reality of politicized business this week. Disney executives had been working behind the scenes to head off Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill, which strongly constrains the teaching of sexual orientation and gender identity and which activist opponents call the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. But Chapek had resisted making a public statement despite entreaties from employee groups at Disney.” 3 (PDF)

  • Republicans Sponsor Hate Bill

    Gay Globe

Former school teacher Chasten Buttigieg is slamming Florida legislation dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which would ban discussion of LGBTQ issues in public schools under the guise of “parental rights,” saying it will “kill kids.” 4

A Republican-led committee in the Florida state house has advanced a bill that would ban all discussion of sexuality and gender identity in schools, a move advocates say will “erase” LGTBQ+ students and history. 5

January 20, 2022 — The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people, condemned the Florida House Education & Employment Committee for passing HB 1557/SB 1834, also known as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which would ban classroom discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity in schools, erasing LGBTQ identity, history, and culture — as well as LGBTQ students themselves. The bill also has provisions that appear to undermine LGBTQ support in schools and include vague parental notification requirements which could effectively “out” LGBTQ-identifying students to their parents without their consent. 6
