    The ACLU of Arizona Responds

“A decision about having a baby or having an abortion is a deeply personal, private decision best left to a woman, her family, and her doctor. Yet some politicians remain obsessed with interfering. Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures performed today, and it’s incredibly safe. But laws that make it difficult if not impossible for a woman to get an abortion if she needs one, particularly if she is poor, are increasing at an alarming pace. Since 2011, states have enacted more restrictions to abortion than they did in the previous 10 years combined. Extremist politicians continue to work to shut down women’s health centers, cut off access to affordable birth control, and shame women who have abortions.” 1

Flight Like Your Rights Depend On It

This amendment would provide a state constitutional right to reproductive freedom in Arizona, which includes but is not limited to the right to make and effectuate decisions regarding “prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, contraception, sterilization, abortion care, miscarriage management, and infertility care.” The measure would also provide a right to a surgical or medical abortion until the point of viability in the pregnancy. Under this measure, viability is defined as “the point in a pregnancy at which … there is a reasonable likelihood of sustained fetal survival outside the uterus with or without artificial support.” 2

EJ Montini Opinion – An Arizona voter initiative may be the only way to salvage women’s reproductive rights

“It’s a question too big to be decided by a slim Republican majority in the Arizona Legislature. It’s a question that should be decided by us.” 3

An American Icon – A Powerful Story

“I was my high school’s valedictorian and in Georgia, that meant being invited to a reception at the Governor’s Mansion. My family didn’t have a car, so that morning, my parents and I took the bus from DeKalb to Buckhead. We arrived at the Governor’s Mansion and walked up the side of the driveway, next to the cars carrying valedictorians from across the state. But when we reached the guard gate, a guard stepped out, looked at us and said, “You don’t belong here. This is a private event.” He took one look at us walking up from the bus and assumed I couldn’t possibly be one of the valedictorians. My parents set him straight and we were eventually allowed in. But I don’t remember meeting the governor that day. What I remember is a man standing in front of the most powerful place in Georgia, telling me I didn’t belong.” 4

  • Andy Biggs a Criminal? Asks for Pardon

Andy Biggs “Appears” to Have Committed a Crime

“U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona asked for a presidential pardon following the Jan. 6 attack of the U.S. Capitol, a former aide to Donald Trump’s Chief of Staff said during testimony shown Thursday. Cassidy Hutchinson, who served as an aide for Mark Meadows, testified she personally heard from Biggs about requesting a pardon. “Mr. Biggs did,” Hutchinson said. Biggs and five other House Republicans sought the pardons from Trump that would shield them from criminal prosecution, according to testimony. Blanket pardons for all those involved in Jan. 6 were also discussed, according to another White House aide, John McEntee. 5

The aide said this under oath who has no reason to lie. Biggs has denied saying this under oath. Who should you believe? Perhaps Biggs should comply with the subpoena and then officially correct the record.
