A friend of mine made the following post on Facebook recently about her drive from the east coast to San Diego. It’s an excellent example of a great attitude. “I just finished driving across this beautiful country of ours—what a thrill!! The majority of drivers were courteous and yet too many were driving dangerously aggressive. There’s a lot of stress in this world. I could feel the difference as I passed through cities and towns. On the other hand, there is also so much kindness out there too. Lots of smiles just waiting to be encouraged. What fun!” What I find interesting is that she acknowledged the stress and aggressive behavior but chose to focus on kindness and smiles. What a wonderful perspective!!

ExperFlyer.com – Find that aisle or window seat. A great website that notifies you when folks on your schedule flight change seats or cancel their trips leaving their previously selected seat open. If you have that option on your ticket, you then might be able to grab that open seat. The FREE version has lots of options. If you are serious, you can pay for the PRO version. A neat service.

Water – Depending on the airline, sometimes buying water on the flight is cheaper than purchasing it in the concourse. First check with the airline but usually a bottle of water purchased directly on the airline from the flight attendants is at least a buck cheaper.

Don’t Wear Shorts – Wear long pants and clothing that is loose and comfortable. It has been recommended to wear mostly cotton or fabrics that are less prone to fire should you ever need to exit the plane in an emergency. A side benefit is that long pants are a bit more sanitary keeping bare skin from rubbing against the various seats.

Frozen Water – Yes, you can carry completely frozen water through security. The water MUST be completely frozen. Some medications require refrigeration. When you carry such medications, make sure the ice packs are COMPLETELY frozen as well.

      • Be sure to read the fine print.
      • What are the reasons that the policy might deny coverage?
      • What about preexisting medical conditions?
      • What happens if war or civil unrest happens when you arrive.
      • Is there a cancellation policy?
      • Remember that every policy is different. Know what you are buying.
      • Generally, don’t buy travel insurance from the same transportation carrier.

Mark Twain had this to say about travel: “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” What this means is that if we spend all our life in the same place doing the same things with the same people, we tend to see nothing but differences between us and people from other parts of the country and other parts of the world. On the other hand, travel opens our eyes and broadens our horizons. The more we travel, instead of noticing differences, we begin to see and appreciate all the wonderful things we have in common with people everywhere.
